Quick start guide

1. Sequence

Drag notes anywhere

Or select a note on the keyboard, then tap or tap and drag to set its length.

Step edit mode

  • 1. Activate Step Edit Mode.
  • 2. Drag vertically on the active step to modify its velocity.
  • 3. Drag right on the active step to modify its length. Dragging to the right edge of the screen sets the length to infinity (INF). An INF note can be stopped in later patterns with the | symbol, available on the keyboard.
  • 4. Drag left on the active step to modify its subdivision.

Stop-note symbol |

  • Tap the | symbol on the keyboard to stop an infinite note.
  • Use it to cut a sustained note at the point where you want it to end.

Fix mistakes

  • Use undo to go back one action.
  • Use redo to restore an undone action.

Modify selection / clear pattern

  • Hold a step to enter selection mode.
  • Drag to define the selection area.
  • Modify or transform the steps in that area.
  • Use Select All first if you want to modify or clear the current pattern.

2. Instruments

Select the current instrument, adjust volume, and mute or solo

  • Tap a knob to select the current instrument.
  • Drag vertically to adjust the instrument volume.
  • Drag left to mute the current instrument, or right to solo it.
  • The gray knob on the right side is the master output.

Edit instrument

  • Tap the instrument edit button (1) to open the instrument view, or tap the currently selected instrument knob again.
  • Each instrument consists of one generator, which can be a built-in rompler, a sampler, or an AUv3 instrument, plus two audio effect nodes. The audio node circles appear in the bar on the left.
  • Tap an audio node button to open it.
  • Swipe down on an audio node button to remove it and choose a different one.
  • Swipe left or right on an audio node button to mute it.
  • You can maximize the instrument view by tapping the button in the bottom-right corner.

Select audio nodes from the library

  • Swipe down on an audio node button to remove it.
  • The library will appear. Select a new audio node instrument or effect.

Add or remove instruments

  • When the instrument panel is visible, the + and trash icons appear on the sides.
  • Tap the + button to add a new instrument.
  • Tap the trash button to remove the currently selected instrument.

3. Record Notes

Live record mode

  • Turn recording on while playback is already running.
  • Tap a sequencer row to select it for recording. Notes are recorded to the selected row.
  • Play notes.
  • Notes are recorded in time with the sequencer.
  • Hold the stop-note symbol | to erase the sequence live, or tap the Undo button to undo the last recorded session.

Step record mode

  • Turn recording on while playback is stopped.
  • Use this mode to enter notes step by step by pressing piano keys.
  • Tap the stop-note symbol | to enter an empty step or clear the step under the cursor. Drag the stop-note symbol left or right to move the recording cursor through the pattern.

Stop recording

  • Turn recording off to return to normal editing.

4. Build a Song from Patterns

Select a pattern

  • Tap a pattern miniature to select it for editing.

Set the loop range

  • Use the loop start and loop end markers above the pattern chain.
  • Move them to choose which part of the song should repeat.
  • Tap the markers to enable or disable them.

Rearrange, copy, and remove patterns

  • Hold a pattern miniature to start editing the pattern chain.
  • Drag left or right to move or copy a pattern.
  • Drag down to remove a pattern.
  • Double-tap a pattern miniature to loop it.

Add more patterns

  • Create more patterns when one loop is not enough.
  • Use different patterns for variation, breaks, fills, or song sections.

5. Use Performance Mode

Enter performance mode

  • Tap the gray master knob.
  • The keyboard changes from note input to performance controls. Each key becomes an XY-controllable effect: drag to adjust its parameters. 2 types of effects are available: sequencer (left) and audio (right).
  • The pattern becomes a playable surface.
  • Recording is not possible (yet).

Leave performance mode

  • Tap a regular instrument knob.
  • The keyboard returns to normal note input.

6. Save, Load, and Export

Save your work

  • Open the main menu to save the project.
  • Projects are stored as .otoo files.

Save under a new name

  • Use Save As when you want to keep the current project and make a new version.

Open another project

  • Use the main menu to load an existing project.

Export audio

  • Open the export option from the main menu.
  • Export the whole song or the current selection.
  • Otoo can export WAV or M4A.
